With their unique look, the Löwchen, sometimes referred to as the "little lion dog," have a rich French background spanning many years. With just 65 known specimens in 1973, this very uncommon species has almost disappeared. Their numbers are still shockingly low today; just about 300 registered globally help to explain their high price tag. These little canines have a very vibrant and outgoing attitude that defies their small stature. Families that can provide the continuous attention and connection they yearn for would find perfect friends in their fun personality and unbounded energy. Löwchens are remarkably healthy dogs with little inherited health problems, which helps offset long-term maintenance costs even with their high initial cost. Families have many years of company from their usual 13 to 15 year lifespan. Usually accomplished using a particular clip that leaves the back half of the body precisely trimmed while leaving longer hair around the chest, head, and legs, the breed requires regular brushing to maintain their unique lion-like appearance. Though they do need constant positive reinforcement and early socialising to become well-rounded companions, their intelligence and drive to please make them rather trainable.
