Addison arrived in the woodland this morning as usual. He heard an animal plead for help just as he was preparing to settle in. He waited till the animal stopped making noise, then he heard it again. Though it was faint, Addison felt the sound originated from the front. Originally filled with the soft rustling of leaves and bird tweeting, the calm morning in the forest was suddenly disturbed by an upsetting sound. Freeze in place, Addison—who had been preparing his regular observation point—found his ears straying to identify the noise source. Though hardly perceptible, the cry was faint and clearly one of pain. His heart went crazy trying to find the sound's direction. Though years of forest experience had sharpened his senses, this cry was unlike anything he had heard before. It was feeble, sure, but Addison's conscience was pulled by an urgency about it. He waited for the sound to repeat, almost daring to breathe as he stood exactly motionless. Minutes emerged from seconds, and the wail returned just as Addison started to question whether he had dreamed it. He was sure this time it came from somewhere ahead of him. The flaw of the sound heightened his worry. Clearly in great need of assistance was whatsoever species creating that cacophony. Addison quickly gave up on his campsite. With his emergency pack in hand, he started to go slowly towards the sound, his every step measured to prevent frightening the injured animal.
