In case of knee pain caused by sports injury, aging, or a medical condition, there are a few ways to get rid of it. If you are experiencing pain at home, you can do many things to relieve it. However, you should follow your doctor's, physiotherapist's, or other medical professional's advice.
A cold pack can relieve knee pain. Apply the ice for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off several times a day. Remove the ice pack if the skin appears red or if pain is felt.
The use of heat can also relieve pain. It loosens tight muscles around the joint and increases blood flow. However, you should only use heat when your knee is not warm. Too much heat can worsen inflammation.
Doing high-impact exercises while your knee is in pain can further injure your joint. Instead, do low-impact exercises that strengthen the knee. Take breaks from your workout to avoid overusing it.
A number of prescription and over-the-counter medications are available to treat knee pain, including acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium. If your pain is severe, your doctor may recommend other treatments or surgery. It is important to consult with your doctor before using any type of medication.
Until you have regained range of motion in your knee, you should also avoid heavy lifting. Talk to your employer if you are unable to perform light duties at work. They may be able to offer practical assistance, such as adjusting your work environment or altering your work schedule.
A natural remedy you can try is apple cider vinegar, which has anti-inflammatory properties. You can drink half a cup of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water every night before bedtime.
You can also relieve knee pain by using essential oils. Ginger essential oil can also be applied to the affected area. You can also use a mixture of ginger oil and olive oil. Cayenne pepper, which contains an active compound called capsaicin, is another natural remedy. A salve or ointment containing capsaicin is also a good option.
Additionally, you can apply a compression bandage around your knee. These bandages should be tight but not tighter than your skin. They will prevent swelling and allow more blood to flow around your knee. You can also use a warming pad or paraffin to help reduce swelling.
Herbal therapy may also be an option for knee pain. Although it hasn't been shown to be effective, some herbs, such as ginger and turmeric, have long been used in medicine.
The water in a hot bath contains magnesium and sulfate, which can help in reducing pain. You can also add Epsom salt to the water to further relieve pain.
