Deserted
Despite the firemen's best efforts, they still had no idea what type of animals were trapped in the drain. If there had been a mother or father around, it was quite possible that they would have spooked them away as they entered the drain.
A Tight spot
Firemen couldn't believe the infants were still alive when they saw them. There was a lot of garbage and dirt in the sewer. Also, the children were freezing and there was no food nearby. The rescuers still thought it was necessary to attempt and help the small animals, even though they had doubts if the infants would be alright.
