You always know a Catahoula Leopard dog even if their fur patterns and eye colours differ somewhat greatly. Early Spanish explorers claimed that these dogs looked like dogs but bark like wolves. Although the breed has changed somewhat, it is still regarded as a great herding dog with a different technique to reach their objectives. Another great idea is keeping them as a family pet. Named for Catahoula Parish in Louisiana, these unusual dogs have remarkable coat patterns and unusual "glass" eyes that can be blue, green, brown, or any mix thereof. Usually reaching 20 to 26 inches, they weigh between 50 and 95 pounds. Historically used for hunting wild boar and herding cattle, catahoulas are extremely clever and have great work ethics. Their unusual herding technique—building a "canine fence" around animals—showcases their extraordinary capacity for solving problems. Devoted to their families, they can be possessive and protective; why, early socialising and persistent training are very important.
