The earliest pointers in the world, bracco Italianos originated in the 4th century B.C. These dogs were rather popular in the middle ages, but in the 1800s they almost disappeared; until 2007, an American club developed for them. They are outstanding hunting dogs because of their cool head, calm attitude, and generally tough character. Renowned for their unique look, these ancient Italian hunting dogs combine the sturdiness of a hound with the beauty of a pointer. Standing 21 to 27 inches tall and weighing between 55 and 88 pounds, their robust frame fits for field endurance. Their facial expression is sometimes regarded as lovely and smart; their coat is white with orange or chestnut patterns. Renowned for their great nose work and pointing accuracy, Bracco Italianos are flexible hunting partners. Though they have hunting background, they treat family members—including children—gently and patiently. To keep their physical and mental health, they must be regularly active and stimulated intellectually.
