20 Rare Dog Breeds You Have Never Heard Of

14. Bergamasco Sheepdog

Meeting one of these huge, dreadlocked shepherd dogs is a delight. Their history begins with the Phoenicians and nearly vanished during World War II. Their most unique feature is their matted fur coats, which combine three quite diverse textures mixed in together. These layers of warmth helped them greatly in their native Italian Alps, but in warm areas they were not so appealing. Three kinds of hair—dog, goat, and wool—which naturally weaves together to create flat mats that reach to the ground—form the unusual coat of the Bergamasco. This amazing cloak protects them from predators as well as from cold weather conditions. Though they have a commanding look, Bergamascos are very clever, patient, and committed family friend. Usually towering 22 to 24 inches tall, they weigh between 57 and 84 pounds. Their intense desire to cooperate closely with their human partners and their innate herding instincts help them to be outstanding problem solvers. Although their coat seems high-maintenance, once the mats are correctly formed, grooming is really minimal.
