Bruno, a fluffy black dog with a striking resemblance to a small grizzly bear, had always exuded an adventurous energy fit for his bearlike look. He looked so much like a bear cub that onlookers often double-take his thick, luxuriant coat and rounded ears. Bruno's regular walk turned into an amazing meeting that would go legendary in their area on this particular afternoon as he was exploring the woods with his human friend.
The actual bear they came across was large; its presence demanded reverence and wonder. Bruno's first response was a blend of curiosity and exhilaration, as if he were meeting a long-lost relative. Not fear. Standing at least seven feet tall when upright, the bear looked at the small dog with a mix of interest and slight amusement. The two contrasted almost comically: a small puppy with the heart of a lion confronting the real monster of nature.
What occurred next turned into local folklore. Bruno channeled his inner bear instead of withdrawing, heaving up his chest and barking confidently over the jungle. Though maybe reckless, his bravery shown the heart of a real warrior in a small package. Perhaps sensing the spirit of a kindred soul in this little but courageous animal, the bear answered with a soft grunt and then ambled out into the forest. Bruno was triumphant in his own mind.
